Birding on the Adirondack Coast

An integral part of the Lake Champlain Birding Trail, the Adirondack Coast offers great opportunities for bird watching.  Ranked by Audubon Magazine as one of the top six destinations for bird watching in the U.S., the Lake Champlain Birding Trail encompasses 88 birding sites throughout its 300-mile loop in New York and Vermont.

Access an interactive birding map and other tools to find the best place to spot a specific species or view recent sightings.

  • Point Au Roche State Park
    Off Route 9, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Habitats are forest and open water. Species found are shorebirds and waterfowl.

  • Wickham Marsh State Wildlife Management Area
    2 miles roundtrip, easy.  This wildlife management area is located just south of the Ausable Marsh.  It includes essentially the same habitat and viewing opportunities, but you can also see a rare cedar plantation and an old homestead site.

  • Ausable Point State Park
    Off Route 9, nine miles south of Plattsburgh, NY 12972. Habitat is marshland. Species include waterfowl, swallows, warblers, vireo, birds of prey. Handicapped accessible boardwalk and viewing platform.

  • Ausable Marsh State Wildlife Management Area
    Ausable Wildlife Management Area is an interesting five-mile circuit, touring extensive marsh areas amid the wide meanders of the Ausable Delta and at the mouth of the Little Ausable River. The marsh is home to many waterfowl species.
